Main Ideas
The main ideas of The Glorious Revolution were to overthrow King James and to switch the country to Protestant. King James had a son who was too young to rule. His daughter, Mary, then naturally gained power of the throne. Mary was Protestant, and James was Catholic. King James II also wanted to discontinue parliament. Parliament did not want a King that ruled with absolute power. They were also worried that if his son were to gain power, Catholicism would become very likely. Religious and political compromise was then made, with no bloodshed. William, a Protestant, took the throne from King James II.
Details
February, 6 1689 was when William and Mary became the first set of monarchs and made a religious and political compromise. By doing this, they: ended absolutism, began a constitutional government, and created the English Bill of Rights. The English Bill of Rights is a document ensuring the events leading up to the Glorious Revolution would never happen again. Separate powers like Parliament and a Monarchy were made, and religious freedom was given.
Compare and Contrast
The Glorious Revolution happened mostly because the people of France wanted to all be equally Protestant. Not only did they want to all be Protestant, they wanted to rid of their Catholic King. On the other hand, the Americans were already given religion freedom by the time the American Revolution happened. Similarly, the French were given religious freedom by the time the French Revolution ended.
